I was studying for my surgery SHELF exam and heard this was a good resource. I read some reviews and there were a lot of people complaining about terrible errors made throughout the book. Well, I decided to purchase it anyway and see what all the buzz was about.

In general, the critics have been correct – there are a lot of errors made throughout the book. But they are stupid errors and easily noticed to be incorrect. For instance, there are 4-5 review questions at the end of every chapter. Well, in the answer section to these review questions, there are LOTS of mistakes – the answer description will say that the answer is D when the answer is definitely NOT D. The description will go on to explain why answer A is correct thus completely contradicting itself. And these types of errors are made over and over – just about every 3rd chapter or so has a review question that has an error similar to this one. So, yes it has a ton stupid (and unbelievable) errors, but I don’t think they take away from the book or hinder your studying.

Even though there are errors throughout, I would still recommend this book. In fact, I wish I had started reading this book earlier in my rotation because it has tons of info that I was pimped on throughout the rotation.

As others have reviewed, I am 15 cases in and have noticed half a dozen or more blatant errors. Frustrating to read and makes studying more time consuming.

Despite several egregious factual errors, the cases and the explanations thereof are generally solid. The diagrams are also good and certainly appropriately detailed for the level of a third year medical student.

My principal qualm with this text is that the questions are poorly written, both with respect to factual information and in terms of typographical editing, and are sorely in need of revision. It’s not just a scattered question here or there that needs attention, it’s at least one question in almost every chapter. Unfortunately, there are no published errata, making the use of this textbook for a detail-oriented medical student (such as myself) all the more frustrating and time-consuming.

I would not recommend this book as a sole resource to any student in their surgery clerkship.
