The Foundations of Chinese Medicine: A Comprehensive Text, 3e 3rd Edition
Author: Giovanni Maciocia CAc(Nanjing) ID: 0702052167

Review

‘This version remedies some of the shortcomings of the first edition and is now as near a complete exposition of Chinese medicine theory as could be presented in a single text. It is unlikely to be supplanted for years to come, if ever, and with Giovanni’s similarly seminal textbooks on clinical practice, diagnostics, gynaecology and obstetrics and tongue diagnosis, forms the bedrock for all practitioners of Chinese medicine in the West.’

Peter Deadman

“The text is beautifully presented in two colours. A large number of clear illustrations and text boxes highlight the important points and aid readability. Learning outcomes are summarised at the end of each chapter. This is a well designed and easy to read textbook, which sources mainly from the classic Chinese medicine texts, including both ancient literature and modern books. It benefits from the author’s rich experience in clinical practice in the West and his training in China. An in-depth understanding of the principles and theories of TCM enables the author to explain this complicated ancient healing system in a way that is understandable to Western students.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in studying TCM systematically, particulary those intending to develop a career in acupuncture.” R Guo, Exeter, UK

Dead Mountain: The Untold True Story of the Dyatlov Pass Incident Hardcover – October 22, 2013
Author: Visit ‘s Donnie Eichar Page ID: 1452112746

From Publishers Weekly

The mystery of the bizarre deaths of elite Russian hikers in a 1959 tragedy on a deadly Ural mountain is the subject of Eichar&’s extensive investigation. Eichar, a film director and producer, tries to make sense of the puzzling tale of the dead students from Ural Polytechnic University; he sets off to interview the hikers&’ relatives, investigators, and even a lone survivor. Following the search party&’s retrievals of the bodies, the questions deepen when the victims are discovered, insufficiently dressed for the frigid weather, shoeless, with violent injuries, including a horrible skull fracture, a leg torn away, and a tongue ripped out. With expert analysis of the remaining evidence, Eichar tries to answer why the hikers, seven men and two women, would go out into the bitter cold without warm clothing to meet certain death; curious, too, is that the contents of the tent were intact. Possible causes for the panic, according to Eichar and officials, are: an avalanche; mysterious armed men; even a fatal tiff by the males over the women. As the elements of this complicated tangle are compiled, the final wrap-up of the mountain tragedy is overwhelming, befitting a case defying explanation. (Nov.)

From Booklist

The Dyatlov Pass incident is virtually unknown outside Russia, but in that country, it’s been a much-discussed mystery for decades. In 1959, nine Russian university students disappeared on a hiking expedition in the Ural Mountains. A rescue team found their bodies weeks later, nearly a mile from their campsite, partially clothed, shoeless, three of them having died from injuries that indicated a physical confrontation. What happened here? There have been a lot of theories, ranging from misadventure to government conspiracy to freak weather to extraterrestrials, but no one has managed to get to the truth. Drawing on interviews with people who knew the hikers (and with the lone survivor of the expedition, who’d had to turn back due to illness), Russian case documents, and the hikers’ own diaries, Eichar, an American documentarian, re-creates the ill-fated expedition and the investigation that followed. The author’s explanation of what happened on Dead Mountain is necessarily speculative, but it has the advantage of answering most of the long-standing questions while being intuitively plausible. A gripping book, at least as dramaticas Krakauer’s Into Thin Air (1997). –David Pitt

While browsing the internet many years ago, I stumbled across the story of Dyatlov Pass and whatever the heck it was that happened there. It’s the kind of mystery that endures, like who was Jack the Ripper, or what happened on the Mary Celeste. A group of experienced hikers make camp, then suddenly in the night, for no apparent reason, cut their way out of their tent, charge off into the frozen mountains half dressed and shoeless, run hundreds of meters from their tent, and die. How can you not be interested in the story. It’s close to unheard of behavior. Toss in bits of mystery such as a strange lights in the sky, Soviet era paranoia, radiation, missing tongues, and it all gets even more fascinating.

Donny Eichar wrote the book as a combination travelogue and history. We get to see both his adventures in traveling to Russia to visit the people and locations and the history of what happened to the hikers. It’s a unique resource in English because Mr. Eichar was able to talk to people who were there, either the lone Dyatlov group survivor, or many of the people who took part in the search and investigation. And if you read through much of the stuff on the internet about Dyatlov pass, this resource clears up tons of bad information. At first, I wasn’t crazy about the travelogue nature of the book, but after a while, it does grow on you. It makes it more fun to both discover what happened, and to discover how we discover what happened (assuming that makes sense). The book is well written and the information is laid out in a logical fashion. All the photos from the original expedition are wonderful to see. Many of the myths around the mystery are absolutely explained away in clear and unequivocal fashion. But…

Mr.
The author does an excellent job of humanizing this tragedy and make no mistake it WAS a tragedy; the death of 9 vibrant young people at the beginning of their lives. For this, the author is to be congratulated.

What the author does NOT do is help in understanding what happened to them. The incident is considered a mystery, because experts of many stamps and varieties cannot figure out what happened. The author himself gives away his spectrum of considered possibilities by eliminating anything paranormal or "unscientific" in the sense of what we currently find acceptable in science. This is a sort of prima facie declaration of what bucket of possibilities he is willing to consider. In short the truth as he is willing to accept it or interpret it.

Spoiler alert. The author concludes that what was responsible was subsonic sound created naturally by the site. However, the searchers/rescuers spent months at the site and experienced nothing similar. In addition, arctic recovery teams were horrified and mystified by the condition of the bodies. Several of the bodies appeared to have been burned or exposed to radiation. This the author attributes to a post death suntan. Again, if this is at all usual you would expect that VERY experienced search and rescue teams (frankly, primarily body recovery crews) would have seen this before.

One thing that would have been extremely valuable was a topographic map of the site and the location of the bodies as found upon it. This was missing and I had to interpret from what I read and came up with entirely different conclusions as to who left the tent and when: (the team was in arctic conditions of sub 40 degree Fahrenheit with some wind) and leaving the tent for any distance improperly prepared meant certain death.

I used the simple, easy to follow (but not easy shortcut!) program and ran a 30 minute, 40 second improvement one year later at the same marathon, from 3:57 down to 3:26.

While that was the goal I had set, I was able to achieve it feeling strong and without hitting the dreaded wall where one just wants to give up especially mentally and start walking. My paces for the 10K segments through 30K were nearly perfectly even: 7:55, 7:53, 7:55, and final average pace for the whole marathon was 7:53. I was even able to run Mile 26, the last full mile, at 7:21 pace, meaning I was doing a speed workout and finish strong at the end of 25 miles already run at goal pace.

I attribute my improvement to the features of this program: more than most others, many of the miles in the program are run at race goal pace, so the goal pace seemed not only easy but also well-ingrained (cadence, stride lengths, feel of the pace in the legs and the lungs). There were also plenty of weekly runs that gave me confidence I could run at the goal pace.

The longest runs in this program are done after the runner has gone through a challenging Thursday – Saturday section, and those runs are definitely not started on fresh legs as many other programs will have you do. This means on race day, when you are actually starting on fresh legs for once, the marathon distance is not that big a deal any more.

It is important to remember this program is NOT A SHORTCUT, despite the misleading notoriety of its "only 16 mile as longest run!" feature.
Thanks to my impulse buying and Prime membership, I had a copy of Hansons Marathon Method: A Renegade Path To Your Fastest Marathon in my hands just two days after learning about it. Written by Luke Humphrey, an elite Hansons runner who also has a master’s degree in exercise science, with Kevin and Keith Hanson, the book outlines their philosophy and program for a successful marathon covering every aspect from training to strategy to recovery. In just a couple of days I’d read the book from cover to cover and I was sold. I’m going to give their program a shot for my next marathon.

Most marathon training programs are fairly similar. For beginners you usually run three shorter runs during the week and a long run on the weekend peaking around 20 or 22 miles. As you get more advanced, speed workouts and higher mileage are added to the training schedule, but the long run – still peaking at 20 or 22 miles – remains a staple of most programs. The Hansons method takes a different approach. It "teaches a strategic and scientifically grounded approach to everything from the long run to speed workouts to pacing," writes Kevin Hanson in the book’s foreword. The Hansons method has evolved over the years helping runners of all levels to marathon success since the 1990s.

The biggest difference in the Hansons program is the long run. Rather that the typical 20-miler, the longest training run in the standard Hansons program is 16 miles. The reason this works, Humphrey writes, is that the long run should simulate the last 16 miles of the marathon, not the first 16. It’s all based on experiencing the cumulative fatigue you experience in a marathon without completely zapping your energy for the next week of training.

Until the End

Chapter One

Present Day

Rock

“Daddy, watch this!” Daisy May exclaimed excitedly. As if she didn’t already have my complete attention.

“I’m watching,” I assured her.

She ran and began doing cartwheels across the backyard before flipping backward into what I now knew was called a back handspring. My baby girl was a little gymnast, and with that came a lot of practices. But every time she beamed at me and said, “Daddy, watch this!” I couldn’t think of anything else I’d rather watch.

The past two and a half years of being my little girl’s daddy had been some of the best years of my life. Only one other smile moved me as much as Daisy May’s.

Trisha stepped out the back door, smiling at me, with two glasses of lemonade in her hands. That smile was the other one that owned me. Daisy May had become my little girl a few years ago, but Trisha had been my girl for much longer. I had been entranced by the teenager who wouldn’t give me the time of day, and completely captivated by the woman she had become.

She was the best mother in the world if you asked Daisy May, Brent, or Jimmy. She was the most incredible woman in the world if you asked me. And she knew damn well we all adored her.

“You nailed that, Daisy, baby,” Trisha cheered, and Daisy May instantly lit up. Our little girl had lived the first seven years of her life without the love of a mother. The woman who had given life to our children hadn’t been able to love anyone. She’d been angry and bitter and had neglected not only the children we now claimed as our own but her oldest son too—one of my best friends, Preston Drake. He’d been the only love these kids had known until their mother overdosed, leaving them in need of a home. Preston had been ready to take his younger siblings in, but Trisha and I had fallen in love with all of them. When we’d asked him to let us adopt the kids, he had agreed. He’d wanted them to have a home life with parents who loved them. Something he had never experienced.

They all worshipped the ground Preston walked on. He was still their older brother, and he watched them every Thursday night and any other time Trisha and I needed a night out alone. It was a family unit that worked.

I was one lucky son of a bitch.

“Momma, do you think I’ll make the team next week?” Daisy May asked as Trisha handed her a glass of lemonade.

“I think you’ve worked hard and you have as good a chance as anyone. But no matter what happens, you are number one to us.”

Like always, Trisha knew the right answer to everything, and Daisy May beamed at her.

“Preston said he would be there,” Daisy May said, plopping down on the grass beside me.

“Then he will be. You know he wouldn’t miss your tryouts for anything,” I replied, taking the glass Trisha held out for me—then pulling her down onto my lap. I liked having my woman in my lap. Always had.

“I’m nervous,” Daisy May added, then took a sip.

Trisha reached over and pulled Daisy toward us and tucked her under her arm. “We will be right there cheering you on. You’ve worked hard, and no matter what happens, you will be our star. We will be so proud of what you’ve accomplished. Most of those girls have been taking gymnastics since they were very young. You’ve managed to get a chance at the team in only two years! That right there is a reason to be proud.”

I loved this woman. She could make anyone feel better. I was sitting out here, getting nervous thinking about Daisy May trying out to make the competitive team, and Trisha wasn’t making just Daisy feel better—my nerves were eIDg too.

Truth was, I didn’t like the idea of anyone telling my baby girl no. But Trisha kept reminding me I couldn’t fight all their battles in life. It was so damn hard, though. They’d suffered enough in their earlier years.

“Next week I get to be a flower girl again,” Daisy said, grinning up at us. She didn’t stay focused on one thing too long. She was already thinking about Preston and Amanda’s wedding.

“You have several weddings coming up. But I imagine next week’s is the one you’re most excited about,” Trisha said, ruffling Daisy May’s brown curls.

“Yep! I can’t wait. Amanda said me and Brent and Jimmy get to all stand up there with them when they say their . . . uh . . . them things they say. I forgot what it’s called.”

Trisha leaned back against me as I chuckled. “While they say their vows,” I said, and Daisy May nodded.

“That’s it. We get to stand up there. And Jimmy gets to hand Preston the ring. The one he puts on Amanda’s finger. And I get to give Amanda the surprise . . .” Daisy’s eyes got big and she shut her mouth.

“What?” Trisha asked before I could.

Daisy May shook her head and grinned, then twisted an imaginary lock on her lips and tossed away an equally imaginary key.

Apparently, Preston had some kind of secret only Daisy May knew about.

“Well, now I’m even more anxious for the wedding,” Trisha said as she sank farther into me. My arms were wrapped around her waist, and I was beginning to think about where I’d like to move my hands. My wife was smoking hot. She always had been. It never got old seeing her in a pair of tiny shorts and a tank top. This body could stop traffic.

Our fifth wedding anniversary was coming up in four months. I had already prepared Preston that I’d need his help. I intended to take her somewhere special. We’d never had a real wedding. We couldn’t afford one. But I had been desperate to make her mine. Back then I kept thinking she’d figure out she could do better and leave me. When I had convinced her to go to the courthouse and become mine forever, I hadn’t thought about the fairy-tale wedding she deserved. I had just wanted Trisha.

It was time my woman had the fairy-tale wedding she deserved right before we went on the honeymoon we’d never gotten.

The first time I’d seen her, she had taken my breath away. Getting her attention had been one hell of a ride. She’d been so determined to stay away from me. Or any man. Then I’d found out why . . . and I’d sworn to myself she’d never have to live in fear again.

Falling in love with Trisha had changed my life. My friends and family had said I was an idiot. I was throwing away my future. Butch Taylor, my father, had never been a big part of my life until I had become a high school football star. For once I had a parent who gave a shit about me. It had been something I’d craved since I was a kid. Making him proud and proving I was worth loving had been what drove me to work harder. My dream was within my reach. I had my father cheering me on, and I would make it to college and then—I knew—I’d play pro ball.

Until my dream changed the day a pair of the prettiest blue eyes I’d ever seen stared at me across the parking lot one morning before school started. That was the first day of my sophomore year, and it would be another twelve months before I would be able to get Trisha Corbin to even speak to me.

With one look, that girl had changed my dreams.

Rereading the whole series, starting with the first few self-published books, there is a clear decline in quality that is super apparent in Until the End. It follows the same formula of all of Abbi’s books: boy and girl meet, instant attraction, instant earth shattering love. In the first few books, there was a reason why people loved each other. I don’t understand why Rock loves Trisha in this book other than she is hot and she was resistant to his charms at first. I don’t know why Trisha loves Rock other than he rescued her. No one really has a personality other than the over done tropes of helpless damsel and alpha male.
And everyone’s personality was already set and unbelievable. I find it hard to believe that every single one of the males was exactly the way they are as a teen in high school as they were as twenty-somethings. Like maybe Dewayne should have been kinder in high school when his brother was around and then developed his smart/sarcastic comments as a defense mechanism after his brother is gone. Show some character growth. And Krit getting addicted to things as a middle schooler? What is he addicted to? We are never shown, everything in this book is tell, tell, tell.
And then Trisha and Rock’s story isn’t even finished. They move in together and then it is present day and on to the epilogues. I feel they got cheated. And all the interchangeable sex scenes in the epilogues. No one had their own personality or style. The same words and dirty talk were used, the same positions.
And then there is the basics of writing. Wrong words used. Switching from first person, to third, back to first on one page. Switching between Fandora being "our stepmom" to "his stepmom" to "his mom," what is she? Did this book have an editor?

Carb cycling is not new to the body-building community but to the general public it is a newer concept. It is related to carb restriction, but provides more variety. The concepts in Chris Powell’s "Choose More, Loser More for life" contain the following:

"Choose More Lose More" presents 4 detailed Carbohydrate Cycling plans:

The Easy Cycle is for those who are "just starting their journey.:
The Classic Cycle is the plan that gives you a "boosted metabolism with fast weight loss."
The Turbo Cycle accelerates and intensifies carb-cycling results so you can reach your weight loss as quickly as possible.
the Fit Cycle is for those who are already very active but "want to drop some weight."

9 minute missions: 20 different workouts designed for optimal results. Each workout is 9 min, and of course you can and our encouraged to, extend the workout longer.

These exercises range from low intensity to high and are mostly calisthenic. They can be done at home or anywhere include: jogging in place, stepping side to side, jumping jacks, standing knee raises with boxing punches. All of these can raise the heart rate to the individual’s desired levels.

One of the major pluses to this workout is that you do not have to always 1. go low fat-high carb (which has proven to cause weight gain and hyper-insulinism in many people), nor 2. go high protein and high fat with low / restricted carb intake. You can mix up your eating lifestyle, lose weight, and improve your health.

Also advocated, is eating 5 meals spread throughout the day to increase metabolism and maintain blood sugar levels. The book includes 35 recipes for main meals and snacks.

Melanie Shankle writes daily on her blog, Big Mama. She is a graduate of Texas A&M and loves writing, shopping at Target, checking to see what's on sale at Anthropologie, and trying to find the funny in every situation. Most of all, she loves being the mother of Caroline and the wife of her husband, Perry. The three of them live in San Antonio, Texas.

Melanie has written in the past on motherhood and marriage, but in this latest book, she explores the intricate relationship of female friendships.

I laughed out loud through her first two books, Sparkly Green Earrings: Catching the Light at Every Turn and The Antelope in the Living Room: The Real Story of Two People Sharing One Life — and this collection was no exception. However, in my opinion, Nobody’s Cuter Than You has an added depth and maturity. It’s filled with hilarious anecdotes, but the lessons gleaned about friendship are rich and full of wisdom.

Throughout the book, Melanie aptly chronicles the whole gamut from early childhood bonds, to the awkward teen years; crazy college shenanigans, and even the challenges of navigating post-college and married life friendships.

I found this book to be both realistic and encouraging. Melanie didn’t shy away from some of the pain that can occur as a result of female friendships, because “any time you attempt to put all your faith in another human being, it’s inevitable that it will lead to disappointment.”
She addresses the sting of betrayal and the hurt caused both by petty accusations and deep, intentional wounds, sharing that “sometimes the best lessons are the ones that hurt the most.”

Melanie touches on the depth of emotion involved when friends truly love each other, and reminded me of the command found in Romans 12:15 to “rejoice with those who rejoice, and mourn with those who mourn.” When her friend Jen’s dad died, Melanie learned one of the most important lessons about what it means to be a good friend: “You show up for your people.

Halo: New Blood. A short story intended to… Well… I’m actually not entirely certain of its purpose. It continues the story of Alpha Nine, the ODST Squad from the video game Halo 3:ODST, obviously, but it doesn’t feel like simple fanservice. It takes bold steps with those characters’ personal journeys and/or fates, the type very likely to alienate devoted fans who adore these characters and have been involved in their experiences in-game. I won’t spoil anything, but I will say that the steps taken with the Rookie and Mickey are easily the most extreme.
The narrative structure here is written in the first person, from the perspective of Edward Buck, a former Orbital Drop Shock Trooper. He recounts his journey to joining the Spartan-IV program, making stops throughout his life to highlight what he sees as key moments and experiences. Avoiding spoilers, these sections are rather variable; some feel slightly irrelevant while others are extremely important storywise, and one extended section is more or less a straightforward rehash of ODST’s campaign, similar to the novel "Halo: The Flood" by William Dietz. The narrative frequently feels jumbled, there are some severe issues with the "stories within stories within stories" structure that the book follows, as I frequently found myself losing track of where I was at in Buck’s story timewise.

However, the fact remains that the characters here are excellently portrayed, considering the limitations the novel’s length imposes as a matter of necessity. Many emotional and tense moments are engagingly written, the plot never spirals into overly slow sections, and most importantly of all, the Spartan-IVs are humanized far better than Halo 4, Spartan Ops, and the entirety of Halo Escalations ever managed.
So this came out today (yesterday? sheesh time flies) and i read it. The story is narrated by former Gunnery Sergeant Buck from the game Halo: ODST and tells various tales from his past as well as some things that may lead into the events of Halo 5. One of those things that we haven’t really heard about yet is the creation of spartan IVs which I was excited to read about. The rest of it however was a mystery to me.

As I mentioned it’s told from the perspective of Buck in first person, I was disappointed to learn that there’s no audiobook narrated by Nathan Fillion out right now which is something that desperately needs to happen.

Otherwise is was a pretty good read, I had fun reading it in Fillions voice in my head. I’m not sure how much of it ties directly in to anything that could possibly be in Halo 5. I think the important bits from it are that Spartan Jun is a member of the spartan program and one of their recruiters. Its plot dealt heavily with the entity known as the United Rebel Front, a human faction that opposes the UNSC, which leads me to believe that we might have human opponents in Halo 5. Spartan IV’s will obviously be major characters in Halo 5. I don’t think we’ll see Buck in Halo 5 but hey who knows.

The other parts of the story deal heavily with Bucks life and the events of Halo: ODST. Buck talks about how he got into his fling with Veronica Dare, and remarks about her throughout the story providing it with a fun to read romance aspect. He talks about what happened to your player character “The Rookie” in ODST and the rest of his squad. If you’re a fan of ODST this is an easy pickup.

Overall I was very satisfied with New Blood.
Halo is the franchise that turned me into a hardcore gamer, and Eric Nylund’s Halo novels are a very large part of what turned me into an avid reader (sorry Harry Potter). They added depth and character to a universe I already loved, and told stories that were just as exciting as the video games they bridged together.

Which makes me wonder, why wasn’t THIS book the official bridge between Halo 3 and Halo 4? Karen Traviss’s Kilo Five trilogy may have much more substantial links to Halo 4 as far as direct backstory is concerned, but Halo: New Blood does an infinitely better job of setting up the new state of the galaxy in general, and the Spartan-IV program specifically. Halo: New Blood actually FEELS like Halo, and not a sluggish and boring political science thesis like the Kilo Five trilogy did.

New Blood also does an excellent job of expanding on the character of Gunnery Sergeant Edward Buck, the fan-favorite ODST played by Nathan Fillion in the games. Not only do we find out what he and the rest of the characters of Halo 3: ODST have been doing since that game, we also get to see his entire backstory with glimpses of his childhood, early career as an ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper), and how he first met ONI Captain Veronica Dare. And perhaps the best aspect of this is that Matt Forbeck manages to capture the character of Buck so well that I actually found myself reading this book in Nathan Fillion’s voice inside my head. To my knowledge, this is the first Halo novel that has been written in first-person, and using a major game character as that narrator on top of it.

This first-person perspective makes it much easier to handle the fact that this novel does not tell a linear narrative.

I was studying for my surgery SHELF exam and heard this was a good resource. I read some reviews and there were a lot of people complaining about terrible errors made throughout the book. Well, I decided to purchase it anyway and see what all the buzz was about.

In general, the critics have been correct – there are a lot of errors made throughout the book. But they are stupid errors and easily noticed to be incorrect. For instance, there are 4-5 review questions at the end of every chapter. Well, in the answer section to these review questions, there are LOTS of mistakes – the answer description will say that the answer is D when the answer is definitely NOT D. The description will go on to explain why answer A is correct thus completely contradicting itself. And these types of errors are made over and over – just about every 3rd chapter or so has a review question that has an error similar to this one. So, yes it has a ton stupid (and unbelievable) errors, but I don’t think they take away from the book or hinder your studying.

Even though there are errors throughout, I would still recommend this book. In fact, I wish I had started reading this book earlier in my rotation because it has tons of info that I was pimped on throughout the rotation.

As others have reviewed, I am 15 cases in and have noticed half a dozen or more blatant errors. Frustrating to read and makes studying more time consuming.

Despite several egregious factual errors, the cases and the explanations thereof are generally solid. The diagrams are also good and certainly appropriately detailed for the level of a third year medical student.

My principal qualm with this text is that the questions are poorly written, both with respect to factual information and in terms of typographical editing, and are sorely in need of revision. It’s not just a scattered question here or there that needs attention, it’s at least one question in almost every chapter. Unfortunately, there are no published errata, making the use of this textbook for a detail-oriented medical student (such as myself) all the more frustrating and time-consuming.

I would not recommend this book as a sole resource to any student in their surgery clerkship.

From the Back Cover

A Library Journal Best Book of 2014
A Christian Science Monitor Best Book of 2014

New York Times bestselling author Karen Abbott tells the spellbinding true story of four women who risked everything during the Civil War.

Seventeen-year-old Belle Boyd, an avowed rebel with a dangerous temper, shot a Union soldier in her home, and became a courier and spy for the Confederate army, using her considerable charms to seduce men on both sides. Emma Edmonds disguised herself as a man to enlist as a Union private named Frank Thompson, witnessing the bloodiest battles of the war and infiltrating enemy lines. The beautiful widow Rose O'Neal Greenhow engaged in affairs with powerful Northern politicians and used her young daughter to send information to Southern generals. Elizabeth Van Lew, a wealthy Richmond abolitionist, hid behind her proper Southern manners as she orchestrated a far-reaching espionage ring—even placing a former slave inside the Confederate White House—right under the noses of increIDgly suspicious rebel detectives.

With a cast of real-life characters, including Nathaniel Hawthorne, General Stonewall Jackson, Detective Allan Pinkerton, Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln, and Emperor Napoléon III, Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy shines a dramatic new light on these daring—and, until now, unsung—heroines.

Like most Civil War buffs, I read every new book that comes out on the subject, whether to confirm/contradict what I already know or to learn new information to add to my mental database. Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy: Four Women Undercover in the Civil War does both. The author, Karen Abbott, has selected four women whose lives are chronicled in the book – two from each side of the conflict – who served during the war in some capacity, mainly as spies. The book will be for sale on this September.

I am familiar with all four women, to a lesser or greater degree. Surely the most infamous female spies of the war were those supporting the Southern cause: Rose O’Neal Greenhow, a Washington Socialite who coaxed many northern politicians into divulging secrets, and Belle Boyd, a small town girl from Martinsburg, Virginia (later West Virginia) who through sheer moxy served as a courier by carrying intelligence to her hero Stonewall Jackson. They were certainly the most colorful and flamboyant of all who served. The two women supporting the north were Elizabeth Van Lew and Emma Edmonds. While Greenhow’s and Boyd’s names were splashed across newspapers of the time, celebrating (or condemning) their accomplishments, Van Lew and Edmonds by necessity served in silence. Van Lew lived in Richmond yet remained loyal to the Union. Her efforts at assisting Yankee soldiers escaping from Confederate prisons and runaway slaves from their masters were no small feat during war time. Her neighbors as well as the government suspected, but were never able to catch her in the act. And finally, Emma Edmonds, who passed herself off as a man and served the north as a soldier/spy in some of the bloodiest battles of the war.
Liar, Temptress, Solider, Spy follows four women’s efforts to help their respective sides during the course of the Civil War and fight alongside men breaking gender norms of the time. The women Belle Boyd, Rose O’Neal Greenhow, Elizabeth Van Lew and Emma Edmonds each have a unique story and the author keeps a fast pace making this book a page turner.
Belle Boyd was living in what is now West Virginia and a supporter of the south when Union soldiers came into the town to occupy. Upon entering the house Boyd shot a Union solider and earned notoriety for it. She continued her work as a courier for the confederates and serving her idol General Stonewall Jackson. After being arrested and sent to prison in the north where she continued her strong acts of defiance shew as finally exchanged on parole and told to stay out of the North. Acting as an overseas courier she was stopped on a ship and detained by the navy where she charmed one captain into marrying her. Boyd is a southern hero who craved fame above all else and was a true believer in the cause especially wanting to follow her idol Stonewall.
Rose O’Neal Greenhow was a socialite in Washington DC who was a strong supporter of the Southern Cause. She charmed top military leaders and senators to gleam information and send them to her friend Beaugrard. She was credited by confederate authorities for providing the key information in allowing First Manassas to be a victory. Greenhow was arrested by the north and became one of the first women detained during the war along with her daughter. After she was exchanged she was a celebrity in the south and was sent on a diplomatic mission to England and France to try and win support for the cause there.

Carter & Lovecraft – October 20, 2015

Carter & Lovecraft Hardcover – October 20, 2015
Author: Visit ‘s Jonathan L. Howard Page ID: 1250060893

Review

Carter & Lovecraft is a Pandora’s Box loaded with all of the wonderfully twisted stuff I love, including a two-fisted homicide cop turned P.I., warped realities, a mysterious bookstore, the Cthulhu mythos, a dash of romance, and creepy fish-men. What’s not to love? Jonathan L. Howard knows how to show his readers a wickedly good time.” ―Christopher Golden, New York Times bestselling author of Dead Ringers on Carter & Lovecraft

“Something new under Lovecraft’s leering stars. Once again we discover that H.P. Lovecraft ‘s tales were more than mere fictions, and so is this novel―it’s a very good fiction. I’ll be keeping my eyes open for more novels from Mr. Howard (no, not Robert E. but Jonathan L.).” ―Brian Lumley, author of Necroscope, on Carter & Lovecraft

“So much Lovecraftian fiction misses the point. You want to shake the author and shout, ‘Weren’t you paying attention?’ Jonathan L. Howard gets it right and offers a delightfully original (and non-Euclidean) twist on the mythos and H.P. Lovecraft himself. Highly recommended.” ―F. Paul Wilson, author of the Repairman Jack series, on Carter & Lovecraft

“Layer by layer, Howard deconstructs the Lovecraftian universe. His detective protagonist is plunged into the heart of a bloody mystery where every step forward brings him closer to doom, and where every revelation peels away the familiar, the known, and finally, all that is rational. Carter & Lovecraft is a sleek, addicting horror novel that gleefully inverts and contradicts Mythos tropes.” ―Laird Barron, author of The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All

“In the cosmic darkness between Sam Spade and Dirk Gently, there’s a nest of tentacles. On that nest of tentacles is Jonathan L. Howard’s Carter and Lovecraft. You are here. It doesn’t get any more weird-boiled than this.” ―Stephen Graham Jones, author of Growing Up Dead in Texas

Howard’s take on Lovecraft and his influence is unexpected and somewhat unique – and one of several reasons why this inaugural title is noteworthy.” ―Bookgasm

“Howard is a supremely talented writer and the Johannes Cabal series makes for superb reading. It would be easy at this point to say if you like Rankin or Fforde or Pratchett or Holt, then you will love these books, but while it may well be true it would be doing Howard a disservice.” ―Sci-Fi-London on the Johannes Cabal Series

“Genre fans will appreciate Howard’s attention to world building, while more general readers will simply enjoy all the horrific fun.” ―Booklist on the Johannes Cabal Series

“Howard’s ear for witty banter and his skill at rendering black comedy bode well for the future.” ―Publishers Weekly on the Johannes Cabal Series

“Fans of the original Lovecraft will have their rewards … but this series debut from Howard (Nightclubbing, 2015, etc.) shines brightest when keeping to his characters’ easy banter and creepy deaths.” ―Kirkus Reviews on Carter & Lovecraft

“This refreshingly original novel updates the eldritch horrors of H.P. Lovecraft for the 21st century.” ―Publishers Weekly on Carter & Lovecraft

“Howard brings the fine writing and attention to detail (character, dialogue, environment) that he developed in the Cabal series to this new book, and his fans should follow him to Rhode Island. Those unfamiliar with the Cabal books, especially readers with a taste for modern-day urban fantasy, should also be pointed in this title’s direction.” ―Booklist on Carter & Lovecraft

About the Author

JONATHAN L. HOWARD is a game designer, scriptwriter, and a veteran of the computer-games industry since the early nineties, with titles such as the Broken Sword series to his credit. I will admit I’ve been curious about HP Lovecraft but his work always seemed a bit inaccessible to me. JL Howard, on the other hand, has been one of my favorite novelists from page one of Johannes Cabal Necromancer. Howard is highly literate, wickedly smart and inventive and just generally a great writer for anyone who likes good prose and inventive story lines. His new novel, Carter & Lovecraft is both a continuation and extension of those qualities and I found in this book that he is CLEARLY a Lovecraft fan and in fact has referenced those works in The Cabal series. A series I still follow with great enthusiasm, pleasure and joy. The man is just a great author in a time when editing seems to have virtually gone out the window and creative stories which don’t follow predictable "guidelines" are usually tossed aside the way Hollywood tosses aside new movies in favor of established "blockbusters" that will generate more predictable box-office earnings.

Carter & Lovecraft is both a detective story/mystery and a voyage through "the mountains of madness" as we follow the central characters while they work to suspend their own disbelief and jump down the rabbit hole in order to solve a series of related murders and deaths which seem, on the surface, to be both impossible and factual at the same time. All the while making discoveries about each other, their respective ancestors and the relationships between all of the above, "deaths" included, and the roles they seem destined to play in all of it… which is not to say there isn’t some machinations going on behind the scenes as well.

Dr. Hamilton has the distinct honor of being gifted with a brilliant mind and compassionate heart. He has used his knowledge of neuroscience, horses and zen to bring a very practical and sensible manual on horse training to the world- with both the horse and rider in mind as a symbiotic unit. Most so called natural horsemanship trainers neglect to mention the spiritual nature of the horse in conjunction with the rider and so fear to tread into the space of ‘energy’ or ‘chi’ – I imagine partly because they fear they won’t be taken seriously. However, Dr. Hamilton is succinct and pragmatic in his articulation of training methods while also establishing the fact that a person’s energy field, i.e. thoughts, intentions, posture, philosophy, etc. will always have an impact on the horse.

Two of the major aspects that seems neglected in training are time and patience. Being with a horse requires one be acutely aware of their human tendencies to want things right away so the horse can ‘do’ something for them- jump, walk, turn, stop, perform, whatever the case may be as to why you wanted the horse in the first place.

If you’re willing to take full responsibility for yourself and your horse, in what kind of horse you helped to create or person you turn out to ‘Be’, then this book is for you. It is reasonable, logical, accessible, based on human kinds’ highest ability to interact with nonhuman life and will help create the opening and ground necessary for you to develop yourself into the kind of horseman/woman that you can be proud of and that your horse would willingly follow- based on the inside out rather than from impersonal conditioning that has trained the horse to do something like a robot, leaving a void, obedient animal in your charge.
